Your VW key fob worked fine yesterday. Today the doors won't lock, the unlock button does nothing, and you're standing in the driveway wondering if you're about to pay for a new remote and a programming appointment. Hold off — on most Volkswagens this is a lost sync, not a dead fob, and the car can recover it by itself.
First, rule out the obvious
If pressing any button produces no LED flash on the fob at all, the coin-cell battery is probably flat — swap it (usually a CR2032) before anything else. But if the fob lights up and still doesn't act, the remote has simply fallen out of sync with the car's receiver. This happens after battery changes, long periods of disuse, or sometimes for no reason anyone can name. It's a known Volkswagen quirk.
The re-sync procedure
- Step 1: Flip out the emergency key blade and pop the small cover off the driver's door handle to reveal the manual keyhole.
- Step 2: Press the unlock button on the fob and, while holding it, use the key blade to manually unlock the driver's door. This pairing of radio signal + physical unlock is what wakes the immobilizer up.
- Step 3: Get in and start the car. The car re-pairs the remote during startup.
- Step 4: Turn it off, reinstall the door handle cover, and test the buttons — lock, unlock, trunk. You're done.

If the sync doesn't take
Then you're likely looking at a weak fob battery (weak enough to transmit but too dim to notice), water damage inside the fob, or a failing door-lock micro switch. Replacing the battery is a two-minute job; beyond that, a locksmith can usually diagnose and clone remotes for far less than a dealer.
